Lawn Lake, a natural glacially formed lake, was enlarged by an earthen dam built in 1903. The dam was raised in 1931. There were issues with the dam documented in 1951, 1975, 1977, and 1978, but due to inaccessibility, there was no upkeep. The dam broke suddenly early in the morning of 15 July 1982 releasing 674 acre-feet (af) of water, eroding areas on Roaring River up to 50 feet deep, pouring out onto Horseshoe Park creating the 40 acre alluvial fan, then taking out the Cascade hydroelectric dam, which held for 17 minutes, and then added a second wave of 16,000 af to the floodwaters when it broke. This completely destroyed Aspenglen campground and caused a lot of damage in the town of Estes Park downstream. Three people were killed. Lawn Lake now exists at its natural level.
